About this deal

Those in attendance insist business was not the main fare that night and the proposed quarantine facility at Avalon was not discussed. The dinner had been arranged so that Lindsay and Paula, a skin cancer survivor, could thank the Victorian and federal governments for their contribution to a new melanoma research and treatment centre planned at The Alfred hospital. Given the extent of his personal relationship with the Fox family, the Premier should recuse himself from any cabinet deliberations on a quarantine facility or other decisions affecting the commercial interests of Linfox,” shadow treasurer Louise Staley tells The Age. Lindsay Fox’s son Andrew has developed a particularly close relationship with the Victorian Premier. Credit: Eamon Gallagher Not only is urban fox control unlikely to achieve anything, it is both difficult and very expensive.Shooting is obviously not acceptable in urban areas, as is snaring and so only live trapping is left. The fox's reputation for cunning is well earned; it is very difficult to get one to walk into a cage trap, even if there is a really tasty delicacy inside. Catching the first fox may take three weeks or longer. However, foxes live in family groups, with an average size of about three adults and four or five cubs.Catching the second fox is harder still and it is virtually impossible to catch them all.Long before you get near this goal, new foxes are moving in to colonise the vacant niche. Thank you to my beautiful and wonderfully patient wife Marta. And also to my mum for putting up with talk of foxes and hedgehogs for the past year. To my brilliant twin boys, Alex and Max – my genuine hope is that you grow up to be foxes, like your grandad. Contents

We know from Cerridwen’s story how important the animals are and how the transformation takes place through them. Looking at animals we see the dance of life and death most clearly. There are women in the world, who run with the wolves. And there are those who run with foxes. I would like to invite you on a journey that has been going on since my childhood and that is becoming deeper and more meaningful with the years. Whether we live in the countryside or a bustling city, most of us have seen a fox. But how much do you know about one of our most iconic animals? Very occasionally, foxes dig much deeper holes in lawns or bowling greens. These can sometimes be half a metre or more deep and the lawn looks like a battlefield. This usually occurs when a blood or bone-based fertiliser has been applied to the lawn. The foxes think there is a corpse and being scavengers, frantically dig to find it All you can do is wait for the rain to wash the fertiliser deeper so that they cannot smell it, or if it is a bowling green or similar area, fence it against the foxes with a small electric fence.

For my part, I promised to protect and keep all the foxes I could. I became a scourge to hunters. Often I saw them waiting for foxes or other animals with rifles in the fields and by the forest. I stopped the car, went out and yelled very loudly or made a fox calling noise, I had already learned it, to signal the animals in this way that they would notice and hear me and can run to hide in the forest. I told the irritated hunters that I was looking for my lost dog and that’s why I was yelling this way. Finally, many people do not want foxes released on their land. In this, their concerns are entirely justified; since displaced foxes do not know where to hunt, they are particularly likely to cause greater problems to farmers by killing fowl. A new development to the traditional cat-flap is now available that reacts to a device carried on your cat's collar, so that the flap will only allow your cat entry, thereby preventing dogs, foxes or other cats entering your house. Controlling urban foxes is difficult, expensive and never successful. In the past, a number of local authorities tried this, particularly in London but most have now given up any form of fox control. The problem is that foxes have been in urban areas for so long that they have reached a state of equilibrium and regulate the size of their own population. A large proportion of the foxes do not breed each year and litter sizes (average just under five) are comparatively small. On his own side of politics there are concerns that his special relationship with one of Australia’s richest and most influential families is clouding his political judgement and potentially compromising his government. That is what happened to me: my mental model was wrong. Several years earlier, I launched a campaign that was very successful. Don’t worry, you’ll hear all about it. This success partly shaped my views about advertising. Because the results were so good, I assumed that the decisions I made were good ones. Some were. But others were not. I had missed the other possible reasons that might have contributed to this success. I was guilty of what is known as a narrative fallacy. 2 This is where we use flawed stories of the past to shape our views of the world and our expectations for the future.
